Our Story

Hi there! Thank you so much for stopping by. We're so happy you're here.

Moonfox & Company is our small family-run children’s press tucked in the woods west of Tokyo, in the same town that inspired many Studio Ghibli stories. On our walks to school or through the forest paths, the scenery often feels straight out of a Ghibli film.

Our journey began with a mother and son who loved books and made up stories everywhere we went, in the car, waiting for ice cream, or inside a lantern-lit tent at home.

After nearly a decade in Massachusetts, we moved to Tokyo in 2021, where new stories began to bloom around us.

Surrounded by woods, rice fields, farms, and shrines, we’re reminded of the folktales I grew up with, stories full of kindness, connection, and living close to nature. There is so much depth and magic in the everyday things children encounter here in Japan, but in a fast-paced modern life, much of it is quietly fading.

Many of these stories and small wonders are also getting lost in the passing down, and often remain told only in Japanese, rarely making their way into other languages and getting lost in translation. We hope to help change that.

We want to create a community where children can experience Japan as if they are stepping into a storybook, where our stories spark their sense of wonder, and where these quiet moments of magic are noticed, shared, and become warm memories that last.

Inspired by the gentle magic of everyday life, the wildlife we meet, and the legends and folklore woven into the places around us, we began creating stories. We hope that each book we make carries a little spark of wonder, like a small lantern lighting up the places where magic hides.

Our first book will launch this fall, just in time for the mid-autumn festival. We can’t wait to share it with you and hope it finds a cozy spot in your heart.
